Heat-pump icing up, not defrosting during Thanksgiving

I cannot know how freezing this fall has been so far, but we have earned at least 3 inches of snow in a matter of two weeks being into fall; The snowfall was a wake up call to our state since a lot of the snow plows were not prepared, especially with the snowfall occurring right in the beginning of Fall, then due to the temperature as being much colder than normal, my household has not been able to adjust to the freezing temperatures as quick, then my family is coming over for Thanksgiving dinner tomorrow. There’s a lot of things that I needed to prepare plus get ready for their arrival… Of course right when I was about to prep some meals I went to go turn on my furnace plus my furnace was not turning on, and i do have a heat pump which is one of the main sources of staying warm in my home. I went outside to check out my heat pump. When I went to it I saw that the entire equipment looked like it had snow on it. It was practically encased in ice plus it did not seem normal. I decided to call my HVAC serviceman right away. When the HVAC serviceman arrived he said it is normal for a heat pump to ice up, however he said that due to the amount of ice plus the thickness of it, it was not normal. It turns out that the coils were blocked by the ice so there was no familiar heat transport between the refrigerant plus the outside air; Luckily he was able to repair the problem within in an hour so I could use my furnace again.
